Leather Motorcycle Vests

Leather motorcycle vests come in a variety of shapes and sizes and it’s almost impossible to distinguish the quality of a vests just by viewing some pictures online.  They really tell a lot about your style of riding and the image you portray to others when you’re riding. There are a few things that should be taken into consideration when shopping for leather motorcycle vests.

1. How often do you plan on using the vests?

Are you planning on using this vest everyday as protection over your normal everyday clothing? If the answer is yes you’ll want to look for a vest that uses at least 1.2mm full grain leather as this is the type of leather that will stay durable yet stay supple the more you wear it. Leather vests that are in the lower price range, generally under $100, use leather products that are either seconds or much thinner that you’d want in a vest that will see normal use. The thicker the leather the longer it will last but also keep in mind that when purchasing a higher quality leather vest there will be a break in period where the vest will feel a bit stiffer than you’d like it to feel but this is true for any type of leather product. The more you wear it the more it will conform to the shape of your body and feel custom fitted. If you don’t plan on wearing the vest that often, a lower price vest will do the job just fine. Just don’t expect it to last very long.

2. Are you applying patches to the vest?

If you’re part of an MC or prospecting one, remember that the patches you put on are going to stay there for a long time. You don’t want to have patches sewn onto a vest that uses leather thinner than 1.2mm because the holes you put into the leather will get larger over time through normal wear and tear and the thinner the leather the faster the stitching will loosen up and you’ll be in the market for another vest in no time. In addition, you’ll want to find a vest that has a back that is designed and/or suitable for patch application. Any designs will be covered up and if the panels of the vests are positioned correctly, your club patches won’t align correctly.

3. How much protection do you want?

Obviously the thicker and higher quality the vest the better protection it will offer to the rider during normal riding conditions as well as in the event of an accident. Higher quality leather will provide MUCH more protection from rashes and injury because of the durability of the leather. Of course the vest will probably need replacing after an accident but can you put a price point on personal safety?

There are a variety of different styles and options to choose from when shopping for a leather motorcycle vest and determining your riding style and needs will help you decide what vest works best for you.
